World Cruise 2013
April 12, 2013
Today was our second day in Walvis Bay, Namibia. At 8:30 AM I left the ship for a tour called “The Living Namib Desert”. The Namib Desert is said to be the oldest desert in the world. It lies next to the ocean but only receives almost no rain. Animals and plants depend on the fog that rolls in almost every day in the morning. Our tour began with a group of four-wheel drive vehicles. Some of the vehicles carried 3 people and ours had 6 people. We left Walvis Bay and drove via the coastal road to an entrance to the Namib Desert located near the town of Swakopmund, Africa. The Namib Desert contains large sand dunes and a few plants and animals. With the trained eye of our drivers we were able to see a snake, a lizard, a worm creature called a skink and a camellia. At the spotting of an animal the guide gave a short talk about the animal. To get to the animals we traveled around and over the sand dunes. We spent about 3 to 4 hours in the Desert and we returned to the ship about 2:20 PM.
Below are some pictures taken from the ship and from my tour.
