Day 5 - Panama Canal

World Cruise 2013
January 9, 2013

Today the ship arrived at the Panama Canal.  We started going thru the Gatun Locks at about 6:30 AM.  The Gatun Locks, takes you from the Caribbean Sea to Gatun Lake in three steps.  At about 8 AM the ship was in Gatun Lake.  It was here we waited several hours for ships coming from the Pacific to the Caribbean Sea to arrive before we entered the narrow part of the canal, which has on-way traffic for the larger ships.  The narrow part of the canal, called the Culebra Cut, where the cut had to be made thru the continental divide is interesting.  I was up on the eighth floor of the ship and to me the cut was from 4 to 5 times higher than the eighth floor of the ship and this to be done over hundred years ago is impressive.  After we got thru the channel we arrived at the Pedro Miguel Mira Locks at about 1 PM.  This lock of one step lowered us from the Gatun Lake to the level of the lake on the Pacific side.  From here it was only a short distance to the Miraflores Locks a series of two steps where we arrived at about 2:15 PM.  We departed the Miraflores Locks at about 3:25 PM and we were at the level of the Pacific Ocean.

The Panama Canal is one of the finest man-made wonders of the world and is considered to be the Eight Wonder of the Modern World.
