World Cruise 2013

Today for most of the day we are at sea heading for a 4 PM
docking at Fremantle, Australia. Fremantle is the port for Perth, Australia.
Perth is the capital of Western Australia and was founded in 1829 as the Swan
River Settlement just up the river from Fremantle. The town of Perth grew very
slowly until 1850 when convicts were brought in to alleviate the labor
shortage. Many of Perth’s fine buildings, such as Government House and its Town
Hall, were built using convict labor.
I got up ate breakfast and went to Good Morning Amsterdam.
At 11 PM, I went to a talk by Bob Tonkinson on “First Contacts and a Desert
Reminiscence. He talked about the contact with some of the last Mardu Aborigine
people living in the desert as they had done for thousands of years. He was
researching these people as part of his Anthropology training in the middle
1960’s. Part of his trip was to see if this group wanted to continue to live
in the desert or become part of the main society of Australia. As a result,
they elected to leave the desert and move into the main society because food and
water were not easy to find in the desert.
Between 2 PM and 3 PM we could start to see Western Australia
so I started to take some pictures. At 4 PM the ship was docked and at 4:30 PM
I left on a tour called “Dedalak Kening: Nighttime Corroboree”. The bus took us
by scenic sites along the coast of Western Australia and by Perth to an area
called Swan Valley. We saw a traditional dance performance and a demo of the
didgeridoo. After the performance we sampled the flavors of a bush supper,
which included kangaroo, emu and other native foods. After the supper we went
to a gallery were you could buy souvenirs. On the way back to the ship the bus
took us thru Perth and its sites but because it was dark I could not take any
photos. The total time of the trip was 6 hours and we spent about 3 hours
getting to and its sites and from the Swan Valley.
