World Cruise 2013

Today the ship arrived in Richards Bay, South Africa at 8
AM. Richards Bay is South Africa’s largest harbor. The harbor is a deep-water
harbor with railway and an oil/gas pipeline linking the port to Johannesburg.
Plants that process aluminum and make fertilizer are located near the harbor.
Titanium is mined in the area.
Before we could get off the ship, South African officials had
to have a face-to-face contact with us to stamp our passports.
I took a tour called “St Lucia Cruise”. It was raining and
on the way to the lake we saw timber forests of Eucalyptus trees. These trees
grow very fast and are ready for harvest in 5 to 8 years. They are used for
posts and they make high quality computer paper from these trees. Lake St.
Lucia is a lake rich in birdlife and crocodile and hundreds of hippos make their
home in the area. Because of the rain, we did not see many birds and we only
saw on crocodile. However we saw many Hippos and because of the rain you would
see more of their body out of the water because hippos stay in the water when
the sun is out and at night they get out of the water and eat grass from the
shoreline.
