World Cruise 2013

Today was the second day for the ship in Cape Town, South
Africa. I left at 8:30 AM on a Cruise Specialists tour called “The Great Homes
& Gardens of the Cape”. We went past many beautiful homes and our first
stop on the tour was at the Groote Schuur Estate. This estate was purchased in
1891 by Ceci Rhodes who gave it to the nation and the University of Cape Town.
The mansion later became the official residence of successive Governors Generals
and State Presidents. After Apartheid was over it became a museum. We had a
guided tour of the gardens and the house. Our next stop was at the gardens at
Cellars-Hohenort Hotel. We had a tour of the gardens and we had lunch at the
Conservatory Restaurant on the property. Our last stop was at the Kirstenbosch
Botanical Gardens, the pride and joy of Cape Town. Founded in 1913,
Kirstenbosch, covering approximately 1,300 acres, lies on the eastern slopes of
Table Mountain. We first stopped for a short presentation on the work of the
garden and later we had a guided tour of the garden.
