World Cruise 2013

Today the ship arrived in Durban, South Africa at 7:20 AM.
Today was the first day of my overland tour called “Victoria Falls & Royal
Livingstone”. At 8:45 AM we left the ship to go to the airport to catch a 10:45
AM flight to Johannesburg. There were 13 people and an escort on the tour. We
arrived in Johannesburg and were met by an English-speaking guide and
transferred to the town of Soweto which is part of the metro area of
Johannesburg. We drove thru the Johannesburg area and when we got to the
Soweto area we had lunch at a local restaurant. Soweto is an area where the
blacks were put during the Apartheid era. After the end of Apartheid the houses
that the people had lived were given to them. Many of these people got jobs or
started a business and some of them fixed up their houses. The restaurant was
first a pub and expanded into a restaurant for the local people.
After lunch we toured in Mandela Family Home in Soweto and
the Apartheid Museum. The museum had the history of Apartheid where the native
blacks were not allowed to vote and the how the demonstrations helped to end the
white rule in South Africa.
We checked into the Westcliff Hotel and had dinner at the
hotel that evening. The hotel is a 5 star hotel built on a hillside. We got
our bags and they transferred us up the hill to our room. From the road you
still had to walk stairs to get to the room.
