World Cruise 2013

We spent the night on the ship in Victoria Harbor and at 8:15 AM I left on a
tour called “Explore Lantau Island & Monastery”. Lantau Island ceded to
Hong Kong in 1898 and is Hong Kong’s largest outlying island. Next to Lantau is
the new International Airport for Hong Kong. To get to Lantau Island we crossed
the mile-plus-long Taing Ma Bridge that links Lantau Island to Kowloon
Peninsula. After crossing the bridge we stopped at a viewing platform for
photos of this bridge and another bridge that links Lantau Island to Kowloon
Peninsula. We stopped at Tai O fishing village built on stilts beside a river.
We saw many versions of dried fish for sale at the market. We got to the town
of Tung Chung and because of environment reasons we had to leave our bus and
board another bus. This bus drove us up to the home of the largest bronze
Buddha statue in the world that sits high on the hill overlooking the Po Lin
Monastery. We had time for photos and to view the exhibitions under the
Buddha. We had a choice of walking down the steps to the Monastery or riding
the bus. I road the bus and at the Monastery we had a delicious vegetarian
lunch and time to take photo of the temple located at the site. We walked over
to Ngong Ping Themed Village for some shopping. After time to shop we boarded
the cable car for a 25- minute ride down to Tung Chung. An highlight of the
ride down was a great view of the Airport. This airport was build on reclaimed
land next to Lantau Island and the plans are to expanding the airports 2 main
runways to 3 runways which will require that additional land be made next to the
existing runways. After arriving in the town we drove back to the pier and the
ship.
